Intensive and inpatient care

Some situations need more support than a weekly session. These programs offer several hours a day, or round-the-clock care, for a set period.

When to consider this level of care

Weekly outpatient therapy is the right fit for most people. A more intensive program may be worth talking about with a provider when symptoms are getting in the way of daily life despite treatment, when safety is a concern, or when you are stepping down from a hospital stay and need more structure for a while. Common levels are:

  • Intensive outpatient (IOP): several hours of group and individual therapy, a few days a week, while you live at home.
  • Partial hospitalization (PHP): most of the day, most weekdays, while you live at home.
  • Residential: you live at the program for a period of weeks.
  • Inpatient: hospital care, usually short, when safety or stabilization is the priority.
A provider, your insurer, or the Milwaukee County Crisis Line can help you figure out which level fits. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. If you are thinking about suicide, call or text 988.
